In a world where the elements, water, earth, fire and air can be controlled by people known as "benders" Fire Nation is waging a ruthless war to control the great nations of others. The only hope of stopping the war rests on the shoulders of a boy reluctant boy named Aang (Noah Ringer). The Last Airbender known survivor of the quiet and the Air Nomads, Aang is the Avatar. The Avatar is the physical incarnation of the world the ability to control the four elements and tap the combined power, knowledge and experience of previous incarnations of Avatar. Avatar's duty is to maintain peace between the four nations and the spiritual world, ensuring that the world remains in balance, a balance threatened by the Fire Nation's war. With the help of a teenager named Protection Waterbender Katara (Nicola Peltz) and his warrior brother Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), Aang begins a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world. Standing in his way is the ambitious Fire Nation Admiral Zhao (Aasif Mandvi) and Prince Zuko (Dev Patel), the exiled prince of the Fire Nation are looking capture Aang to restore his honor.
Pre-production began in late 2008, during the filming began in March 2009 in Greenland. After two weeks, the cast and crew moved to Reading, Pennsylvania where the production designers and special effects crews worked for weeks preparing the local site of the film. A production crew exploration of the area found the Pagoda on Mount Penn, who served as an ancient temple in the film. Reading, Pennsylvania Mayor Tom McMahon said that the crew made improvements of roads and underground electricity lines surrounding the structure.
