First-time camper ... need advice on purchasing equipment?
I am a member of a co-ed Boy Scout troop venture, and from our troops is new, we are now raising money to go on high adventure trips. The next month, let along a first aid class wilderness camping, and we're cooking. We have a permanent camp, and I think the troops are using tents, and have my sleeping bag. My troops are used in demonstrations on how to manage first aid. I think I'll have to buy shoes for walking, and thats good sturdy backpack made for hiking. Does anyone have any advice on what type of things you need to buy, and what kind, because I've never gone camping before. Besides, I live near a Cabela's, so plan to buy my stuff there. Thanks!
The rule of camping is, first, to borrow, and then buy. My family, children and grandchildren have been camping across this great nation during fifty years. Very soon there were piles of garbage, and we only know the campers who have experienced the same problems and policies. Furthermore, large backpacks loaded, so you better be strong to begin with, if desired. Small backpacks are easier if you're not a weightlifter. Find a friend who is camper expert. Borrow what you think you'll like it. Try once. If you've ever used, it is the right size and does not hurt, only then buy. The best way to prepare is displayed on a walk, and have to go to the bathroom and shower and eat somewhere on the road. What are you, wear, the need to bring? It is your plan for the field, the season and climate. Have fun!
